然而，现如今，激烈的社会竞争、快速的生活节奏，使深阅读变得越来越困难和奢侈，书籍的沉重仿佛加重了生活的重担，压得人喘不过气来。于是，人们开始了“浅阅读”。
浅阅读就是阅读时不多加思考而跳跃式地“扫读”。所谓囫囵吞枣、一目十行，它追求的是短暂的视觉乐趣和心里的怡悦。在公共汽车、地铁等嘈杂的公共场所，处处能看到一些人拿着手机、电子书津津有味地进行着浅阅读。
