布龙菲尔德的《语言学》共分二十八章，可以在内容上分为两个部分：第一章至第十六章为共时语言学，第十七章至第二十八章为历时语言学。其中共时语言学中，第一章到第四章论述语言学的一般问题；第
五章到第八章论述音位学；第九章至第十六章论述语法和词汇。而历时语言学中则主要论述比较法、方言地理学、语言演变、语义变化、借用等。可以说，布龙菲尔德的《语言论》一书内容几乎涉及了语言学的所有方面，构成了一个全面而具体的语言学体系，既使得读者更加明晰语言学的结构和主要内容，又具有开创性，对全世界语言学的发展都有巨大的帮助。比如：布龙菲尔德的语言学理论对中国的语言学发展就有很大影响，他的语言学分析方法现在仍有很多为中国语言学家所采用，用以分析方言以及少数民族语言。
语言是一门历史悠久的艺术，它随人类社会的产生而产生。语言产生之初，只是简单语素的组合，随着社会的发展，人们的思维方式、认识能力的提高，语言也日益丰富完善。语言的生命存在于人类社会对它的使用过程中。语言因人类认识事物和互相交流的需要而产生，随着人类社会的发展而逐渐完善。语言作为一种社会现象，在漫长的历史画卷中留下了它发生、发展、变化或消亡的轨迹。
布龙菲尔德《语言论》中的语言学系统研究内容主要从语音层、语义层和语法层三个层面分析，与我们所学的基本一样。但《语言论》中有许多布龙菲尔德的创新之处，比如：提出语言的科学描写的标准，排除对心理学的依赖，主张从“形式”入手，谨慎对待“意义”等。
由于我对语言学的理解及学习有限，目前水平尚浅，因此本报告中大体分析一下语音、语义和语法三个层面，之后主要分析《语言论》中第二章“语言的用途”，就这一章节谈一些个人观点以及语言学家的相关观点。
