Dan Sperber和Deirdre Wilson的关联理论是在H。P。Grice的交际理论与会话含意理论的基础上发展起来的，他们合着的《关联性：交际与认知》一书中对其有很精辟的阐述。关联理论作为认知语言学一个理论给西方语用学界带来了极大影响。它将关注的核心投到人类交际与话语理解方面，其影响力已超出了语用学领域，延伸到翻译领域。因为自然语言中的每个话语都可以有多种理解，要正确的理解自然语言，就必须通过语境来寻找信息的关联，然后根据话语和语境的关联进行推理。而翻译中为达到语用等效，其前提正是正确地理解自然语言。因此，关联理论就成为可以指导翻译的语用翻译理论。

王嘉怡，你怎么又找不到橡皮了？我不知道，我又没看到。你的东西你自己不看着，不然让我给你看吗？还不快找！哎，知道了！过了十分钟，只听一声：找到了，橡皮找到了！类似的对话经常能在我家听到。这不，这种对话又再一次在我家重播。
那天，我一边写作业一边胡思乱想，突然一不留神写错了一个字，我便向桌面进发，把书本抬起来，看看有没有橡皮。可是找遍了桌面，还是没有找到橡皮的蛛丝马迹。于是，我便呼叫援兵——妈妈，来帮我一起找。妈妈闻讯赶来，说：你看看你，隔三差五的丢东西，昨天钢笔找不到了，今天橡皮又找不到了，我还记得你上个星期二的时候还把手机放在学校了，真是个糊涂鬼！还不快找！哎，知道了！话音刚落，家里就响起了翻找东西的声音。爸爸也闻声赶来，帮我找橡皮。全家总动员，书柜，抽屉，书包……都被翻空了。这是我大叫一声：啊，找到了！爸爸和妈妈都停下来，不约而同的问：在哪里找到的？呵呵，在……文具盒里。我话音刚落，妈妈就开骂了：你看看你，丢三落四的！
看着好不容易找到的橡皮，我放心了，也暗自下了决心，以后不再丢三落四了。
