相传，古代有个火魔无恶不作，抢走了七个姑娘，最年轻的姑娘叫做侬香，她后来从一个白发花花的老爷爷那里得知只要拔下火魔的头发就可以把她勒。姑娘们齐心协力，了火魔，魔头成了一团火球，落在哪里，哪里就会起火。姑娘们就挑水去泼，终于灭了邪火。此传说相沿成习，渐渐成了泼水节。
