写记叙文必须交代清楚时间、地点、人物、事件、原因、结果，使读者对发生的事件有全面而清楚的了解。这就是记叙文的“六要素”。凡是记叙性体裁的文章，如通讯、特写、报告文学、记叙散文，包括小说，都要具备这六要素。
《祝福》这篇小说，其故事发生的时间，是旧中国年终祝福的时候。地点是鲁镇。故事中涉及的人物，有“我”、“鲁四老爷”、“祥林嫂”等。事情的经过是祥林嫂两次到鲁家佣工，不但受到严重剥削，而且精神上也受到摧残，最后沦为乞丐。故事发生的原因，是祥林嫂寡居之后，被迫到鲁家佣工，故事的结果是当样林嫂被鲁家撵出之后，年终祝福的时候，默默地去了。由于小说的六要素交代得清清楚楚，所以，读者看了这篇文章之后，会对内容有清楚的`理解。从而产生对祥林嫂的同情和对旧社会的僧恨。
