作者维克多雨果生活在一个动荡并文化激荡的时期，他以笔杆来挑逗，激起人们内心中的反抗。运用许多的冲击对比来达到抒发本真思想。充满浪漫主义的他，以巴黎圣母院的小说，通过描写善良的吉普赛少女爱斯梅拉尔达在中世纪封建专制下受到摧残和迫害的悲剧，反映了专制社会的黑暗，反动教会的猖獗和司法制度的残酷，突出了反封建的主题，充分表现自身的特色。
巴黎圣母院副主教克洛德道貌岸然、蛇蝎心肠，先爱后恨，迫害吉卜赛女郎爱斯梅拉达。面目丑陋、心地善良的敲钟人加西莫多为救女郎舍身。故事情节复杂，人物性格夸张，整部作品以色彩浓郁的笔墨写出，充分体现了浪漫主义小说的特点。小说在内容的安排中，将腐朽的封建王朝和高尚纯洁的`“奇迹王朝”，两个法庭，两种审判，两个绞架，两个社会等进行对比描写。而在细节上体现美与丑的对比，善与恶的冲突，悲剧中又能体现喜剧，种种任务上的性格突出到种种特色赋予了巴黎圣母院不一样的历史风貌，给人以情感上的共鸣。

初始，伽西莫多的出场仿佛给我投射了一个丑恶的影象。他的独眼，他的聋哑，他的驼背，他的巨大和丑陋都让我先入为主地把他当作了大反派。婴儿时，他是一个人人见了都想把他烧的丑小鸭；青年时，他是一个表面风光但人人唾弃的“愚人王”。他的脸仿佛注定了他就是恶魔的化身。到后来，我才看清他那清澈、崇高的灵魂。他对像使唤奴隶一样，役使他的克洛德忠心耿耿，这是怎样的一种单纯？他对曾经对他有恩的爱斯梅拉达，用尽全部生命的悉心照料和赴汤蹈火，是怎样的一种如火一般刚烈的爱情？他受尽了人世间的歧视和欺凌，却又满足的，勤劳的当着他的敲钟人。如此美丽，如此可敬的人性难道在他那丑陋的外表下就一文不值了吗？
相比而言，如果说伽西莫多的外表丑陋，那么克洛德的心灵便更加令人鄙视。一开始，良好的背景让我觉得他是个学识渊博的善良人——他收养了丑陋的伽西莫多，他是人人敬畏的副主教……但是当故事的情节愈演愈烈时，我读懂了他精神世界中的畸形。他不择手段地“爱”，让他卑鄙地，变态地劫持爱斯梅拉达，并且因“爱”成恨地要置她于地。这是一种自私的，低微的，霸道的“爱”，充满了病态的“爱”，那不算是爱，只是伤害……
然而，那书中最美的笔墨都倾注在了爱斯梅拉达身上：她美丽，因为她有一张天真清纯的脸孔；她善良，因为她的内心充满了同情和爱心。她可以为了保存甘果瓦的生命而嫁给他，她给饥渴难堪却无人理睬的敲钟人送水……她有菩萨一般无人能及的心肠，她有倾国倾城的美貌，她是善与美的化身！
怎么能不引起我的思考？人性的层层面面是多么复杂却简单：尽管人的精神世界是双面的，没有完全的丑，也没有绝对的美。但是，美就是进步的方向，美就是最原始的目的。就像书中说得那样：
“美就是完整，美就是全能，美就是唯一有生命力的东西。”
当灭灯钟响彻在巴黎圣母院里，所有故事都结束了……但那古老的故事将永恒地被传诵……
