相传，有一个叫后羿的英雄，从昆仑山顶一口气射下九个太阳，并让最后一个太阳每天按时升起，按时落下，为民造福。他有一个美丽的妻子，叫嫦娥。后羿也有许多弟子，其中有一个心眼坏的人是逢蒙。后羿从王母娘娘那得到了一种仙丹，据说人吃了能长生不老，还可以升天成仙，逢蒙得知后，就想尽各种办法把他弄到手，终于他想出来了。有一天，逢蒙装作生病了，在家里休息，家里只有嫦娥和逢蒙两人，突然，逢蒙跳下床朝嫦娥大喊：“快把仙丹交出来!”，嫦娥被逼得没办法，只好把仙丹吞了下去。
后羿回到家后，发现妻子嫦娥不见了，就追出门外，发现月亮特别圆，一看，嫦娥在上面，可是，他往前走三步，月亮就退三步，后羿也没办法，于是他就派人到嫦娥喜爱的后花园里，摆上桌子，放上她平时最爱吃的食物，来遥望月亮上的嫦娥。从此，中秋节拜月的风俗在民间传开了。
