《夏目友人帐》主要讲述了男主人公夏目贵志拥有可以看到妖怪的特殊能力。因为父母双亡他的性格较为孤僻，并且由于他具有特殊的能力，他常辗转在于亲戚之间并被同龄人欺负。虽然他经历了许多不幸，但他依旧有好善良没有埋怨任何人。最终他被有好善良的藤原夫妇收养并进入高中。有一天，他被妖怪追赶躲进神社，不小心打破了一只强大妖怪斑的封印。并牵涉到了他祖母夏目玲子的遗物—一本同妖怪签订的`契约书。之后，这只强大的妖怪平时便变成猫的样子待在夏目身边保护他，但是他的条件是夏目后要把这本契约书给它。但在此之前夏目决定尽其所能把契约书上的名字还给妖怪们让它们得到自由。由此，一个个温馨、感人、惊险的故事就此展开。

蝉靠什么发出声音呢？为了揭开这个秘密，我常常躲在树下悄悄地观察。在观察中发现蝉鸣叫时，总是喜欢“抬头”、“挺胸”、“翅尾”。这又是为什么呢？
实在安奈不住我的'好奇心，一天，我想了个法儿捉到了一只蝉，进行了仔细观察和研究。我先摘掉了蝉的大翅膀，把它放到地上，它在地上拼命地扑打着，清脆地叫着，看来它并不是从大翅膀里发出的声音。我又折断了蝉的嘴，可它仍然使劲地叫着，我想也不是从它嘴里发出声音的。蝉究竟是靠什么发音的呢？经过反复观察，我发现这声音好像是从胸部发出来的。于是，我发现它凹部的两侧各有一片鱼鳞似的硬壳，像钳甲一样，里面有一对透明薄膜。蝉鸣时，薄壳来回地颤动，我用手轻轻一捏这个地方，蝉就叫了，我不停地捏，蝉就不停地发出那震耳欲聋地叫声，我想：这片薄膜应该就是它的发声器吧！我把薄膜刺破，然后再捏了一下，它再也不叫了。真奇怪！
后来，我查阅了资料。在雄蝉的腹部两侧各生着两付天然的“乐器”，腹部的小孔穴上方有一块薄薄的盖片，里面有像鼓皮似的发音膜，这是雄蝉特有的“响板”，也是雄蝉的发声器，发音膜内部肌肉收缩振动，蝉就会发出声音。蝉没有侯部，也没有声带，是不可能唱歌的。它之所以能发出声音全靠腹部的“乐器”。雌蝉没有“响板”，就不会发出声音，所以人们叫它“哑巴”蝉。
这时，我才明白，蝉叫的时候，为什么老爱“抬头”、“挺胸”、“翘尾”了。原来，蝉先生不会“唱歌”，它只是在演奏“乐器”而已啊！
