电影《孔子》中的情节主要从孔子五十多岁起展开。五十多岁的孔子受到鲁定公赏识，从中督宰晋升为大司寇，这让他得以踏上仕途。在鲁定公的支持下，孔子在那一时期完成了自己许多的政治设想，设计帮助鲁国收回了被齐国侵占的三城，维护了鲁国的尊严，提出堕三都的想法。然而就是因为如此导致三都对此大为不满，在季桓子的设计下，孔子开始流亡，周游于列国，直至晚年才回到鲁国。
电影《孔子》改编了史书中记载的堕三都、周游列国、子见南子、孔子回国以及韦编三绝等故事，除了阐述中国儒家“仁义礼乐”思想外，两千多年前的陪葬祭祀、叩拜礼数、木简文书、建筑风格等都映射着中国深厚的传统文化；片中孔子带领弟子离开鲁国踏上周游列国的颠沛之路——他们走过四季轮回，在传道授业的同时遭受百姓非议、经历饥寒和战乱、忍受弟子亡的切肤之痛等场景，气壮悲歌，令人敬畏。
电影中孔子在没有季桓子军人队伍的帮助之下，巧用计谋夺回被齐国侵占的三城这一情节很令我震惊，我们都知道孔子是世家大儒，是位圣人。这好像就给了我们其实孔子只是个书生的感觉，却不知其实孔子也是很善于用兵作战的，他的射艺其实也是颇为高超的，这可以从孔子与季桓子比试那一情节中看出来。通过电影孔子，我们不难发现，孔子其实是一位文武双全的大儒。
在整部影片中，孔子都像观众们展示了一个大爱大仁，拥有高尚政治理想的形象。他可以为一个陪葬的小奴隶而向君王求情不惜得罪在鲁国权势滔天的季桓子，可以在被鲁国抛弃的情况下依旧让弟子回去解救鲁国于危难中，可以在被困饥寒交迫之时依旧弹琴、讲授······这样看，称孔子为圣人当真不为过，他的言行举止貌似已超脱于“人”这个概念了。
然而，我想说，孔子的确当真是个圣人，但也绝对是个普通人。这部电影将孔子拉下神坛，从一个凡人的角度去诠释这个“圣人”。孔子亦是一个普通人，他也有缺点，也有七情六欲。；不经意见了南子给后人留下口实，他是惊艳和动心于南子的美貌的，但他终以一句“可有些人就是好德如好色”决然斩断了即将升华为暧昧的一种情愫。简单的人物出场，寥寥的情节铺陈，却巧妙地反映出了孔子在本性和信仰之间的取舍，耐人寻味。
有家小而不能享其乐，惜弟子而不能全其身，爱国家而不能报其君，恋故土而不能立其足，怀理想而不能偿其志。孔子周游列国十四载，受尽风霜之苦离别之痛，尝遍人情冷暖世态炎凉，依然坚守礼仪仁和，坚持在求索，这样的孔子留下的是立足万世的思想，是奠定中华文化两千年文化的核心，是使后人受益匪浅的精神之髓。
周润发饰演的孔子是这部电影的主线和灵魂。不管在何境地，自始至终坚决淡定，礼仪之说娓娓道来，颜回、子路、冉求，性格各异，但爱师如命，遵循礼仪仁和的精神如命。子路助卫国，冉求回鲁国效命。最牵动人心的是颜回，颜回是孔子最钟爱的弟子，外表文文弱弱却机智灵活、意志坚定。在电影中，颜回后，孔子一直紧紧地抱住他的尸体，始终一语不发，呆坐在那里，茫然如求，若有所思。孔子爱颜回甚至比爱他的儿子还要多一些，因为儿子只能传承脉，颜回却可以传他的大道。
当影片最后皓首霜须的孔子再回到阔别多年的故国之时，跌落尘埃痛哭失声，既符合一个受尽颠沛之苦的游子应有的情怀，也凸显了这个于平凡之中孕育伟大的生命个体的不同凡响之处，同样地这一手也深深拨动了我内心中那根最脆弱的弦。
孔子说：后人理解我，后人误解我，都因为《春秋》。不难预料，《孔子》也一样，会在不同人心里留下不同的印象，在不同人的内心埋下不同的种子。电影抓住了孔子的神，抓住了那个时代的症结点，让我有悲伤又有感动。君子固穷、君子义、君子传道以及君子不愠，这便是一部《论语》，这便是一个孔子。
