蝉属于节肢动物门、昆虫纲、同翅目。蝉又名知了，幼虫期叫蝉猴。蝉的品种在世上约有1500种至多。蝉的体长约2～5公分，它有两对膜翅，两个双眼以及三个单眼。一般常见的蝉依时间次序有：春末出现的蟪蛄；夏至出现的黑蚱蝉；暑伏中后期出现的蛁蟟；以及夏末暑伏都出现的呜蜩。
蝉大多生活在沙漠、草原和森林。一般大多数的蝉都是灰色的，蝉的身子是圆形的，下半身是尖的，就像一颗子弹一般。蝉的蛹一般会在泥土中度过生命开头的3～5年。在这漫长的黑暗生活中，它会不加选择地吸食树木跟部的汁液，然后在某一天不为人知的深夜中，破土而出，它凭着自己生存的本能爬上一棵树，抓住树身，进行了蜕皮羽化的重要过程。
蝉的蜕变过程一般需要一小时左右。蝉会将蛹的外壳作为站立点，慢慢地自行解脱，就像从一副盔甲中爬出来似的。
蝉的最长寿命约60～70天。6月末，幼虫开始羽化成虫；七月下旬，雌成虫开始在一起，产卵；八月上、中旬为产卵盛期；直到八月下旬～九月上旬，大多数的蝉都因衰老而陆续去。所以说，蝉的生命是万分短暂、万分珍贵的。但是，我们却似乎能听到蝉儿们知足地在树上唱歌道：“我是一只蝉，一只在泥土中生活了六七年的蝉。在这个盛夏，我从泥土中钻出来，来享受属于我的夏天。在这个夏天，用歌声来歌唱我完美而短暂的一生。在这短暂的一生中过好每一天，让自己不遗憾，即使我的一生只有70天，但也要好好活着。活着歌唱我的生命，歌唱上帝赐予我完美的一生。虽然短暂，但已知足矣！”这歌声，带着蝉儿们美好的希望，渐渐地远去、远去……
