如果说《教父》第一部可以看作是迈克和命运抗争的失败，第二部则是迈克接受自身命运之后的痛苦挣扎。和第一部不同的是，第二部采用了双线叙 事，一条是迈克柯里昂为了家族事业奔波劳碌，却与家人渐行渐远；另一条是老教父域图柯里昂从西西里岛单一槍一匹马来到美国，建立起一个完美的家庭和他的黑手一党一 集一团一。
都是为了家庭，老教父在自己的原则下为朋友们解决zheng府解决不了的问题，逐渐受到大家的爱戴和信任，他的家庭，正是在这种情况下日益壮大。若干年之后，当迈克坐到教父这个位置上时，他却无法按照父亲当初那样做，正像他所说的，“time change”。
迈克只好想尽一切办法令家族业务转向合法化，他和美国参议员交朋友，到古巴寻求政治保护，但还是不可避免地受到了新时代zheng府对其意大利黑手一党一 首脑的指控，虽然逃过一劫，却着实如履薄冰。在家族内，亲人们不是忘不了对他的仇恨，就是难以忍受在他的阴影下生活。两位最亲近的人给了他最沉重的打击， 让他先前所做的一切努力都没了意义。
没有父亲在身边做军师，迈克支撑得越来越艰难，他只能用又一次大屠一来发泄胸中的愤懑。如果说第一部结尾的大开戒是站稳脚跟的必要之举，那 么这一次，掉病得快要的老人，监狱里的.囚犯以及手无缚鸡之力的悔改之人，只能说明迈克的心态已经扭曲。还记得老教父为了让他从西西里岛回到美国，和仇 家达成友好协议吗？迈克的气度真的远不及父亲。
对汤姆的疏远从另一个角度表现出迈克逐步向独断专行的暴君发展。汤姆赫根是两部《教父》里我最喜欢的人物，沉稳低调，机警理智，更重要的是，忠心耿耿。即便是被迈克无理由地排斥，汤姆也不会提出过激的反对，而当家族需要他时，仍旧义无反顾，事情也办得漂亮。
整部影片最喜欢的段落是年轻时的域图柯里昂在房顶上跟踪黑帮老大，很少看到这种角度的镜头，安静，流畅，美妙。在那个年代，为了那样的理由，了那样一个人，似乎真的顺理成章。而那双刚过人的手抱起小迈克时，科波拉告诉我们，为了家庭，一切已然注定。
