能力对命运说：“你的功绩哪里比得上我啊?”命运说：“你有什么功绩要和我比试?”能力说：“寿与夭、穷与达、贵与贱、贫与富，都是我能做到的。”命运说：“可是，彭祖的智慧不在尧舜之上，却享有800岁高寿。颜渊的才能不在众人之下，却早夭。孔子的道德不在诸侯之下，却倍受困窘。殷纣王的德行不在箕子、微子、比干等贤臣之上，却位居王位。季札在吴国得不到爵位，田恒却占有了齐国。有气节的伯夷和叔齐饿在首阳山，而无耻的季孙氏比坐怀不乱的柳下惠要富足得多。还有许多例子就不举了。假如这些都是你所能操纵的，那么为什么让此人长寿而让彼人短命，使圣人穷却让逆子发达，让贤人贱却让愚人显贵，使善人贫却让恶人暴富呢?”能力回答说：“假如像你刚才所说，我本来对众人是无功的，所以众人才会这样;那么难道这些都是你所控制得了的吗?”命运接着说：“既然说是命运，那么还需要谁来控制呢?我不过是顺其自然，直的就往前推，率的就听任它。实际上，人们都是自寿自夭、自穷自达、自贵自贱、自富自贫，我哪里能够知道那么多呢?我怎么能管得了那么多呢?”
能力和命运的这段对话说明：力是进取之力，命是自然之命;力与命紧密相联，命与力因果相关;有什么样的能力，就会有什么样的命运;而“命”的最终取向，除了自身努力外，还必须借助自然的力量。
