老人们说，在那遥远的大海的海岸上，曾经有一个水怪被困在那里。
这个水怪平时生活在水中，身躯巨大，长着一对鼓眼睛，一口牙齿闪着锋利的白光，浑身披着鳞片，一天可以游好几千里路。这还不说，它还可以兴风作雨，当风雨大作的时候，它就可以飞腾起来，直上九霄，非一般的鱼虾可比。
可是水怪现在被潮汐冲上岸，困在沙滩里。水怪在陆地上是半步也挪动不了的，再加上它身体过于庞大，尽管它用尽全身的力气挣扎，而且前面又没有高山峻岭、关隘峭壁的阻隔，路也并不远，但它仍然是没有办法回到水中去。可怜这个水怪空有一身本领，却无法施展，连自己都救不了。
这时，几只水獭(ta围拢来，见是水怪被困在那里动弹不得，就你一言我一语地嘲笑起它来。有的说：“喂，大水怪，你为什么上这里呆着来了?你平日的威风都上哪里去了呢?”有的说：“水怪啊，原来你也有这种落魄的时候啊，真还不如我们水獭，陆地和水里都能自由往来呢。你真是白白浪费了一身好本事啊!”
要是在平时，水怪才不把这群微不足道的水獭放在眼里呢，可是现在，它被困住了，，只好任凭水獭们戏谑嘲弄，心里十分窝火。
最后，一只颇有威信的.老水獭开了口：“水怪啊，你平日里总是看不起我们，完全不考虑我们也有尊严。现在你被困，知道是什么滋味了吧。只要你开口请求我们一句，我们就帮你回到水中，你要不肯开口，我们可就不管你啦!”水怪自恃清高，不愿丢这个脸，就扭过头去不理它们。
过了很久，水獭们又来了，对水怪说：“水怪啊，我们就要离开这里了，这是你最后的机会，你愿意我们帮助你吗?”
这时候，其实只要稍稍借助一点外力，水怪的困境就能够解除，可是它怎么也放不下身份，说什么也不要帮助，还打肿脸充胖子说：“就算烂在泥沙里，得也像个英雄，我自己情愿这样。我可没有乞求别人帮助的习惯，你们用不着管我，爱上哪儿就上哪儿去吧。”于是，水獭们走了，其他可以帮它的动物见到这种情形也不来理睬它了，免得自讨没趣。
水怪就这样一直坚持着它可怜的自尊而被困在沙滩里，谁也不知道它最终是是活。
其实，接受帮助并不是什么丢脸的事。如果像水怪那样过于清高而又不愿依靠群众，就会孤掌难鸣，就算有本事也无法施展，岂不是反而浪费了一身本领吗?
