圣甲虫是食粪甲虫中个儿最大、最有名气的一种，它的身材小巧玲珑的，穿着黑色的铠甲。古埃及人对它尊重备至，把它视为长生不老的像征。
在一个牧场上，一坨新鲜的牛粪上围满了食粪虫。他们成千上万的跑来跑去，大大小小，形状各异，品种齐全，全都乱糟糟的滚来爬去，准备在这个"大蛋糕"上为自己大大的占上一份。他们有的在白天干活，在表层搜刮；有的一头钻进厚厚的牛粪堆里，挖出地道猎取好的矿脉﹔有的从底层下手，将挖好的财宝立即埋进地里﹔那些小而无力的则只能待在一旁可怜兮兮地捡捡那些身强力壮的小伙伴们掉下的渣渣屑屑了。
看，那个因为迟到去参加盛宴而一路小跑的是哪一个？这位美食家就是圣甲虫，它那长长的爪子僵硬而笨拙地捣腾着，好像它腹部下面装着一个涌动机，在不停的推动着似的，它的那对棕红色小触角肆意的张开着，透着垂涎欲滴的焦躁不安。
它不一会儿就做好了自己的“蛋糕”，正在搬运回家呢！过了一会儿，它终于到家了，圣甲虫把粪球搬进客厅的餐桌上，一整个粪球就把整个客厅给塞满了，这位美食家坐了下来，开始闷头干饭。他整整吃了12个小时都没停过嘴，始终一动不动地待在餐桌前一直在吃。圣甲虫的嘴不停吃着，后头则不断的排泄那些已不再含营养的成分。排泄物连成一条细细的黑线，宛如一条条头发丝，边吃边排泄，可见它的消化速度之快。那根头发丝从头连到尾，没有出现一丝断裂，一直挂在排泄口上，先排出的部分则都盘成一堆，只要没有干透，展开来就像是动画片里长发公主的长发一般，只是颜色不一样罢了。
怪不得法布尔说圣甲虫很勤奋，因为圣甲虫排泄出的排泄物是可以做成肥料，让植物变得更加健康。圣甲虫不仅是美食家，还是大自然的奉献者呢！
