Though she initially called it Elinor and Marianne, Austen jettisoned both the title and the epistolary mode in which it was originally written, but kept the essential theme: the necessity of finding a workable middle ground between passion and reason. The story revolves around the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. Whereas the former is a sensible,, rational creature, her younger sister is wildly romantic--a characteristic that offers Austen plenty of scope for both satire and compassion. Commenting on Edward Ferrars, a potential suitor for Elinors hand, Marianne admits that while she "loves him tenderly," she finds him disappointing as a possible lover for her sister.

说起来，这座大厅也有一百几十年的历史了。它落成于1869年，正式的名称应该叫作音乐协会大厅，由建筑大师奥菲尔汉森设计。外墙黄红两色相间，屋顶上竖立着许多音乐女神雕像，古雅别致。大厅内共有1642个座位和大约567个站位，金碧辉煌的建筑风格和华丽璀灿的音响效果使其无愧于“金色”的美称。厅内有收藏馆，馆分两室。一间是展览室，定期举行收藏品展览，供人参观。一间是档案室，一边的书架上放满大量历代手写的、木刻的、铅印的音乐书籍和乐谱；另一边是一排铁箱，藏有音乐大师的`乐稿、书信和其他手迹，其中有莫扎特的乐稿：《最后一个交响曲》、舒伯特的手稿：《未完成交响曲》等。屋子中间是一长排桌子，供研究者查阅资料之用。档案室原为勃拉姆斯的办公室，他临终前一再嘱咐，要把他珍藏的几千册音乐书籍和乐谱全部捐献给档案室。
