达尔文是19世纪著名的科学家，进化论的创始者，他生前常说，他的《物种起源》等著作和学说是“集体的产物”。在一封信中他曾这样写道：“我清楚地看到，如果没有那些可钦佩的观察者所搜集的大量材料，我决写不出那本书来。”事实上，他和华莱士的交往便是科学家这种谦虚无私精神的体现。
华莱士是英国著名的自然科学家和旅行家，比达尔文小14岁，他和达尔文一样，进行着科学考察的活动，曾到南美的巴西、马来半岛等地做生物考察，采取动植物标本，在同一个课题上进行研究和写作。其间，他读过达尔文的《一个植物学家的航行》，也和达尔文有过几次通信，讨论交流研究心得，不过两人都没有提及他们各自的独立研究和正在写作的具体内容。
1858年6月18日，正在努力撰写《物种起源》一书的达尔文，收到了华莱士寄来的一篇关于进化论的手稿----《论变种无限地离开其原始模式的倾向》。达尔文惊诧得目瞪口呆，他说：“我从从未见过有这种更加令人惊奇的偶然巧合。......他现在采用的学术名词，甚至也和我的书稿中各章题名相同......”
如果是这样的话，进化论的优先权将归于华莱士了，达尔文再发表著作，就有抄袭和剽窃之嫌达尔文这时思想斗争十分激烈。要知道达尔文已经从事20多年的研究了，当他环绕全球作科学考察时，华莱士还是一个刚入学接受启蒙教育的小学生。达尔文由于旧病复发，加上孩子们身体不好，使得写作时断时续，进度很慢，才让华莱士后来居上。但他不愧是品德高尚的人，他决定退避三舍，成人之美，建议华莱士赶快将论文发表出来，同时为了避嫌，他打算中断自己的写作，让华莱士独享荣誉。
但是，华莱士也是品德高尚的人，他知道了这件事情后，不仅果断地放弃了优先权，而且满怀敬意地对人说：“当我还是一个匆忙急躁的少年时，达尔文已经是一个耐心的、刻苦的研究者了，他勤勤恳恳地搜集证据，来证明他发现的真理，却不肯为争名而提早发表他的理论。”
最后在别人的.劝说下，达尔文同意和华莱士的论文合并，以合著的名义提交林奈学会宣读。达尔文非常感谢华莱士，他写信致意，并说：“如果有着可钦佩的热情和精力的人应该得到成功的话，那么您就是最应该得到成功的人。”
在华莱士的鼓励下，达尔文在1859年11月24日这一天，终于出版了《物种起源》这一巨著，1250册书在当天销售一空。华莱士高兴地喝彩，称这本书是“迄今为止最重要的书籍之一”，并将进化学说这一理论称之为“达尔文学说”。

1963年，17岁的少年比尔·克林顿在白宫玫瑰园里，见到了肯尼迪总统。握手的一瞬间，他冒出一个疯狂的念头：我也要做白宫的主人。
此后，克林顿却连续三次放弃去华盛顿。1973年，他从耶鲁大学法学院毕业，华盛顿一些政治大佬看上了他为民主党总统候选人麦戈文助选的经历，邀请他去工作。克林顿考虑了十天，拒绝了，他厌倦了给别人拉票。碰巧，阿肯色大学法学院需要一名助理教授，他决定去做教书匠。
1974年，他萌生了参选阿肯色州联邦众议员的想法。此时，一个名叫约翰·多尔的老朋友打来电话：“我现在是联邦众议院首席顾问，负责调查尼克松总统是否应受弹劫一事，需要年轻律师，快来华盛顿吧。”这一次，克林顿只考虑一天，就谢绝了。约翰·多尔十分震惊：“你犯了个愚蠢的错误。这是弹劾总统!多少人梦寐以求的历史性机遇，你居然放弃?”
