从小最喜欢读的故事是历史，而在历史的源头是神话。九天之上还有另一个世界，比人间更纯净，甚至可以用更为良好的秩序来干涉凡尘的罪恶。当然现在长大了，尽管知道神话可以说是人类对历史近似于科幻的美化，它们无法被证实，只能抱着不切实际的想法去做梦。可是在世界的真相面前，一个完整世界的美好想象，真正是一种可以让人忘忧的救赎。这些年在畅销书排行榜里的水分已经越来越不能让我惊讶了。所以当我发现这本《美国众神》时十分惊喜，一本神话与科幻的结合，又特别符合人性的故事逻辑。
美国是一个移民组成的国家，可以说聚集了世界上绝大部分民族在此块荒凉的大陆上群居。美国建国的时间不长，可是各族人因为各种原因来此定居的历史并不短。在这本书的设计里，来自于不同大陆的世界各个部族不仅带来了他们的生活习惯，更带来了他们对神的信仰。漂洋过海的爱尔兰少女囚犯通过嫁给船长，带着身孕漂流至了美洲大陆，也带来了爱尔兰小精灵的故事，带来了家乡整套传说以及祭祀的仪式和巫术。她在孩子们的口袋里，一边装着盐，一边装着粮食，睡前在家门外的廊前放上一小盆牛奶。她坚信多舛的命运一直未将她完全吞噬，都是受到了小精灵和其他神灵的庇佑。
还有从非洲大陆被贩卖黑奴的货船偷运到美洲的黑人姐弟，被迫分开后如虫豸草屑一般被奴隶主转来转去，一切可能发生在人类身上的欺凌，他们都在各自的命运中体验过了。弟弟最终成为奴隶运动的先锋，在战争中失去了一条手臂，姐姐在奴隶主的庄园里，相对应的那条手臂在同一天忽然就萎缩了下来坏掉了。不论苦难和欺凌如何碾压这一对孩子，他们都会在不同的地点，在同样的夜里，在树林在河边跳起祭祀祖先的舞来，并以此获得安宁。弟弟在战争中失去生命的那一天，姐姐灵魂中的生命之光好像也熄灭了，在她年华老去时，逐渐成为了当地的大巫。可是即便她将拜神的舞蹈与祭祀的仪式教授给了下一代女巫，被记下来的只有实用的巫术和拜祭的仪式，却再也没有人记得众神。
所以这本书是众神因为被遗忘快要消失时，试图挽回信仰的故事。在新时代的`美洲大陆已经有了新的神，信用卡神、高科技神、高速公路神、媒体之神等等。倒映出现代社会对需要繁琐冗长的过程来达成的事情，所产生的不耐烦。畅销书的清单里琳琅满目的成功学，闲暇聊天里最容易问起来的话题常常是有什么捷径。快速高效的一切一切显得现代人如此繁忙，恰恰是绝大多数人灵魂深处巨大的空洞，需要这一切来填充。大多数人，真的已经忘记了，或者从来也等不及，耗尽漫漫一生时光去找到一件可以一直做下去的事情，更别提信仰了。
书里提及了许多神以及有关于神的故事，包括古罗马、埃及、印度等等所有曾经古文明最发达的人类聚居地所诞生的神，在这片新兴大陆里共存。其中有一个让我印象最深刻的小故事，从沙漠部族来到美国投奔亲戚的普通男子，带着公文包四处推销到处碰壁，害怕被老板兼近亲的家人责骂，坐上了美国的出租车。出租车司机恰巧是同族，他们一起聊起了部族里古老的故事，还有故事里的神。他与司机感叹他最大的愿望就是换一种方式去生活。在路上突遇小事故，司机的墨镜掉了下来，他看见了如燃烧火焰的眼睛，原来这就是他们曾经最信仰的神。他们之间居然拥有了一个亲密的夜晚，第二天一早，神已经消失，带走了普通男子原来的一切，而把出租车司机有关的这个身份全部留了下来。尽管在认出神明时，他说，我并没有什么可以满足普通人愿望的法力。可是他给了已经越来越少却未曾忘记他的子民可以继续生活的温暖和力量。读到这里我是有些感动的。
书里还是有一些细微末节的小设计不是特别严谨，但是不影响整个故事的逻辑性和阅读性。作者尼尔.盖曼在序言里讲起自己已经有了这个故事，编辑帮他设计好了封面，黑色的底色上有一只画满了图腾的水牛头骨，他才开始把这个故事写下来。在另一个完整的幻想的时空，用人类可以理解的方式，演绎神的故事。可以说，这是进入二零一八年这几个月以来，我读过最好的故事。
