因为，有家族才有民族，有民族才有国家。如果家不能成为族，国也就失去了生存的脉。所以，理顺家族脉络，探寻家族根源，发展家族文化，是一件关乎国家生存亡的大事。要发家兴国，首要的是要研究家族历史，编写家庭族谱，构建和谐家族关系，促进国家不断发展和社会全面进步。所以，历朝历代的先祖们，在国泰民安、中兴鼎盛时期，都倾其所有、群策群力，编写好自己的家谱。
家谱是家族发展流程的真实写照，也是家族岁月足迹的历史刻记。自有人类社会以来，特别是进入文明社会以后，人类“不知父母”的原始愚昧时期已经过去了，掀开了人类社会高速发展的崭新篇章。因而，姓氏兴起了，家族兴起了，家族发展的漫长历程就被记载下来了，因而成为一个家族斑斓的历史典籍。
家谱是子孙学习的最好教科书。一般来说，家谱都记载了先祖们生产、生活、迁徙等最大事件，特别是先祖们为了自己家族生存发展而形成的奋斗精神和自我品格塑造精神，是后人们不可多得的直接范本。在一般的家谱里，有社会名流的详细记录，也有家族败类的真实记载，为子孙后代做人、做事提供了最鲜活的教育材料。
家谱是国史方志的最好补充。国史是一国之史，方志是一方之史，记载的都是国家和地方的大事、概事以及一种发展流程趋势，没有平凡人、平凡事的记载。然而，各族各房的家谱，就很好地弥补了国家历史、地方志书这一天然性的空白。因为家谱，可以细致地记录每一个民族、每一个家庭、每一个人的生命流程，包括个人的出生、成长、业绩、亡、墓葬等等，是最完整、最真实、最细腻的人类活动的历史书卷。
家谱是社会走向文明和进步的阶梯。家谱可以很直接地反映族内人与人之间、族外人与人之间的各种伦理关系，为人们的各种交往，特别是爱情、婚姻、家庭交往提供了很好的伦理世系图，避免了许多不健康、不道德、不科学行为的发生。现今的高速发展社会，人们迁居的机会多，流动的节奏快，不按照派序取单名的多，族人互相不认识的多。如果没有家谱，人们只知姓而不知族，更不知辈份，很容易在伦理道德上出现失误，给社会和家族造成不必要的伤害。
当然，编写家谱要破除封建的宗法观念和迷信思想，要对历史负责，对子孙负责，对社会负责，绝不能把编写家谱作为积聚宗族势力、宣扬房头霸业、美化家族历史的卑劣手段，更不能把家谱作为传播封建迷信思想和精神污染的工具。
现在，中国正在迈向小康社会，人们的物质文化生活越来越丰富，最需求的是精神文化生活，是认祖归宗的传统文化素养，因而全国各地都在收集资料，编写家谱，弘扬家族文化和民族文化，这是一件值得庆幸和十分有价值的好事。但是，一定要运用历史唯物主义和辩证唯物主义的目光和手法，站在中华民族5000年厚重的大幕下，才能编写出符合历史真实而又独具家族个性的家谱，才能促进社会和谐、家族文明、人类进步，才能让中华民族在世界民族之林，更加秀美光艳。
