大提琴是体型较大的乐器，在弦乐中排名第二。四根琴弦由细到粗排列，最高的音可与中提琴比较，而最低的音也和钢琴最低音不相上下。它身材优雅，弧形的琴身让人一见就仿佛听见了它那深沉而宽广的声音。琴头有四个小把手，那是调音钮，调音时根据声音的高低需求扭动它们便可调音。
大提琴全部使用风干木头制作。风干木头质量越好，风干的时间越长，木头就越松弛，做出来的琴音质就越纯净、优美。有一些琴用的是几百年的风干木头，做琴的工人一般要世代相传才能做出一把好琴。这些琴好，但也十分贵重。一把百年的意大利老琴的价值要上百、上千万。
大提琴历史悠久，其“进化史”可谓百经周折。它的最初模样已无准确答案，但它在很久以前，琴身几乎为长方体，粗糙而声音难听，经过漫长的年代，才变成了今天的大提琴。在它很“小”的时候，本是皇宫贵族的宫廷乐器，与钢琴等乐器一样，昂贵而不耐用，没有在老百姓中普及。到了后来，大提琴才被传出宫外，被音乐家们进行修改与完善，而这一时间的被改善的琴，才能算真正的问世。但是，这个时代的古琴只有少数幸存了下来。现在，这些琴被音乐家争抢，以天价卖出，但其音质却是天宫美乐。
大提琴演奏方法十分复杂，需要一年多时间才能打下坚实的基础。右手握弓，自然搭在琴弦上。左手按弦，四根手指按住琴弦，大拇指放在琴脖的后面。学好两只手，再把琴放在两腿中间，夹住琴。最后，还要学习换把位和高音区的拇指把位。只有将手指变得起泡，磨茧，破皮的程度，才算稍稍步入真正的演奏阶段。而要达到一万小时的练琴时间才能拉出响亮、悠远、优美的声音。
