战国后期，七雄争霸，赵国常常受秦国的欺侮。赵国大臣蔺相如能言善辩，在“完壁归赵”和“渑池”会中，为赵国争得了荣誉，立下了汗马功劳。因此，赵王十分器重他，封他为“上卿”，同朝名将廉颇为这事很不服气。
一天，廉颇在府中踱步，怒气冲冲，两手叉在腰间，眼睛里闪烁着一股不可遏制的怒火，他重重地拍了一下桌子，大声呵斥：“我廉颇武功盖世，舍生忘，为赵国作了多少贡献，立了多少功劳，那蔺相如只不过是一个懦弱无能的书生罢了，有什么能耐?”这时，旁边的人说：“廉将军，蔺丞相有胆有识，您不可轻视他呀。”“哼，什么有胆有识，我在大街上，三番五次地阻挡他的去路，他胆小如鼠，不敢向前一步。”廉颇趾高气扬。
这些话不胫而走，很快就传入了蔺相如耳朵里。蔺相如解释说：“我不是惧怕廉将军，而是怕我和将军不能和睦相处，如果我们两个大臣争斗起来，人们会认为我们内部不和，其他国家就趁虚而入，坐收渔翁之利呀。”
当廉颇得知蔺相如退让是因为把国家利益放在首位后，自责不已，于是，他自愧不如：“我真是糊涂，有眼无珠，哪能和蔺丞相相比呀。”他袒露背脊，背着荆条亲自到蔺府认错赔罪。到了蔺府后，廉颇双膝跪地，羞愧地低下头，虔诚地忏悔：“蔺丞相啊，为了国事，您处处忍让我，不和我斤斤计较，我还侮骂你，这都是我的错，您用荆条狠狠地抽打我吧。”蔺相如见此情景，赶忙扶起廉颇，说：“廉将军，您这是何苦。”随后，蔺相如摆下酒席，与廉颇促膝谈心，握手言和。
从此以后，蔺相如与廉颇成为了一对很要好的朋友，他们同心协力，辅助赵国，使其他国家不再侵犯赵国。
