交际是否成功关键在于人对事物之间的联系或关联的认识。人类在认知过程中往往以最大关联为取向，但在实际交际过程中我们只能期待产生一个最佳关联，即听者在理解话语时用最小的认知努力获得足够的语境效果，并以交际为取向。关联理论认为语境是一个在互动过程中为了正确理解话语而存在于人们大脑中的一系列假设，所以关联理论的语境不限于现实环境中的情景或话语本身的语境，交际中的语境不是固定不变的，而是动态的。而最佳的语境效果是由明示——推理模式提供的。明示，即说话人明白无误地表达出自己的意图；推理，即听话人从说话人提供的信息中推断出说话人暗含的意图。其中，听话人的推理是理解话语的核心，而关联则是听话人推理的基础。对话语进行推理就是在话语与语境假设之间寻找一种关联，关联选取得当就会获得足够的语境效果，有了语境效果，就能正确理解话语，使交际获得成功。

从那次以后，我便当作什么事也没发生过，当在楼梯口碰到她时，两人微微一笑，便擦肩而过。突然有几天，我一直都没有听见哭声了，原来，她们搬走了。我想，她的哭声是我曾认识她的痕迹，当哭声消失时，她也走了。
她走后，搬来的是一位大哥哥。他使我感到很奇怪，一个人住着若大的房子，而且养着三只小狗。每当他出门或回家时，总是会听见小狗们的大叫。安静。只要他轻声一句，小狗便立即停了下来。有一次小狗突然窜进了我的家中，大哥哥一改以往的冷酷，一个劲得说对不起，好像那不仅仅是他的宠物。我想，他已经把小狗都当成他的亲人。
两个月前，我的邻居又变成了一位老奶奶。很少见到老奶奶出门，而且那么久以来，从来没有人去探望过她。一次放学后，在楼梯转角碰见了老奶奶。一手扶着扶手，一手抱着水果，一步一步得慢慢走上楼。我看见了，连忙上去帮忙。老奶奶告诉我，她的儿子都在国外，给她买了这户房子安度晚年。我夸奖说奶奶的儿子真孝顺，老奶奶却叹了叹气，说：“有钱就算孝顺了吗？”那一刻，我明白，老奶奶要的不是钱，也不是房子，她要的是关怀。
