战国时代楚秦争夺霸权，诗人屈原位列右大夫，很受楚王器重。后来，屈原的主张遭到上官大夫靳尚为首的守旧派的反对，他们不断在楚怀王的面前诋毁屈原，楚怀王渐渐疏远了屈原。有着远大抱负的屈原倍感痛心，他怀着难以抑制的忧郁悲愤，写出了《离》、《天向》等不朽诗篇。
公无前229年，秦国攻占了楚国八座城池，接着又派使臣请楚怀王去秦国议和。屈原看破了秦王的阴谋，冒进宫陈述利害，楚怀王不但不听，反而将屈原逐出郢都。楚怀王如期赴会，一到秦国就被囚禁起来，楚怀王悔恨交加，忧郁成疾，三年后客于秦国。楚顷襄王即位不久，秦王又派兵攻打楚国，顷襄王仓惶撤离京城，秦兵攻占郢都。屈原在流放途中，接连听到楚怀王客和郢都攻破的噩耗后，万念俱灰，仰天长叹一声，投入了滚滚激流的汩罗江。江上的渔夫和岸上的百姓听说屈原大夫投江自尽，都纷纷来到江上奋力打捞屈原的尸体，同时拿来了粽子、鸡蛋投入江中。有些郎中还把雄黄酒倒入江中，以便药昏蛟龙水兽使屈原大夫尸体免遭伤害。
从此，每年五月初的屈原投江殉难日，楚国人民都到江上划龙舟，投粽子，以此来纪念伟大的爱国诗人，端午节的风俗就这样流传下来。
端午亦称端五，是我国最大的传统节日之一。“端”的意思和“初”相同，称“端五”也就如称“初五”;端五的“五”字又与“午”相通，按地支顺序推算，五月正是“午”月。又因午时为“阳辰”，所以端五也叫“端阳”。五月五日，月、日都是五，故称重五，也称重午。此外，端午还有许多别称，如：夏节、浴兰节、女儿节，天中节、地腊、诗人节等等。端午节的别称之多，间接说明了端午节俗起源的歧出。事实也正是这样的。关于端午节的来源，时至今日至少有四、五种说法，诸如：纪念屈原说;吴越民族图腾祭说;起于三代夏至节说;恶月恶日驱避说，等等。
迄今为止，影响最广的端午起源的观点是纪念屈原说。在民俗文化领域，我国民众把端午节的龙舟竞渡和吃粽子都与屈原联系起来。俗说屈原投江以后，当地人民伤其，便驾舟奋力营救，因有竞渡风俗;又说人们常放食品到水中致祭屈原，但多为蛟龙所食，后因屈原的提示才用楝树叶包饭，外缠彩丝，做成后来的粽子样。
