Most of the children like elephants, because they think elephants are kind and friendly.

年迈的大象和活泼的小老鼠都住在同一个树旁。每天早上，老鼠都早早地起来为大象找吃的，因为大象快看不见了。
有一天，大象起来的很早，他刚起来，就跟老鼠说：“老鼠，我已经看不见了。”“啊？象爷爷您……”小老鼠慌张地看着大象，大象沉默不语，说：“也许，我要去那个地方了……”大象的神情中闪现出一丝哀伤，但又很快消失了。
“哪…哪个地方？”
“那个地方有我的亲人和朋友…”他想起了过去的那些往事，可是现在，已经没有一个大象在身边了。
“那您，去了之后还会回来么？”
他淡然地笑笑，平静地说：“当然不会回来的.。”
“象爷爷……你为什么不回来了？”小老鼠望着大象，有些疑惑又有些忧虑，“你走了，我怎么办？”
象爷爷并没有回答她的问题，仍然还是淡然地笑笑。“好了，走吧！”他的声音平静得像清澈的湖水，平静得让人察觉不到那是一个即将归去的大象说的话，“那是每一个大象最终的归宿。”
老鼠没有听懂他说的话，但只好和他一起去，因为她怕大象路上遇到危险。走了很久，终于到了那个地方前面是一个岛，要过桥才能上岛。可是，那个桥有几块木板掉了，只有小老鼠才能修好。但是小老鼠不同意，她恳求大象：“大象爷爷，你走了，我害怕！你能不能不走啊？”大象仿佛没听到似的沉默着，他对着远方的那片树林，喃喃自语道：“爸，妈，姐姐！我回来了！我到了天堂，一定会过来好好陪陪你们的！还有我最好的朋友们，我来看你们了！”虽然那声音不大，但还是被老鼠听见了。她看到大象的眼睛里竟然流出了眼泪！她可从未看到过他流过眼泪啊！她明白大象的意思了，可是她最怕的，就是一个人生活了啊……
过了好一会，大象才轻轻地说了一句话：“我相信你可以的！”老鼠听了，心想：“大象，我一定会好好生活的！何况，就算他现在陪在我身边，也不能陪我一辈子啊！”于是，她马上灵活地把桥修好了。
大象走了过去，他听到后面老鼠说了一句话：“我一定会好好生活的！再见！”他放心地笑笑，慢慢地走到了森林深处，永远的沉睡了下去。
