于是，大拇指汤姆拿拐杖，“没头脑”扶老爷爷过马路路，纸做的姑娘牵着那盲人老爷爷的小孙子和提菜。他们送盲人老爷爷回家后，在回家的路上，大拇指汤姆突然开口说：“我帮了老爷爷的大忙，你们呢？靠边站，哼！”说着，还摆出一副得意的样子。“没头脑”不服气了，反驳说：“谁说你的功劳最大？我的功劳才是最大的'。”大拇指汤姆听了，心里直冒火气，大声嚷道：”我帮老爷爷拿拐杖呢！”“没头脑”又说：”拿拐杖有什么了不起的！我还扶老爷爷过马路呢！”就这样，他们你一言我一语吵个没完没了，谁也不让谁。纸做的姑娘大声说：“你们别吵了，大家功劳都很大，大家团结起来，功劳不是更大吗？”被她这么一说，谁也没有再说话了。纸做的姑娘又说：“好了，我们应该为我们做的事感到高兴啊！”就这样，他们一边笑一边回家了。

这笑声传遍了每条街上。
