要把握说明对象及特征。阅读说明文，首先要准确把握说明对象，区分事理说明文和事物说明文。说明对象，即文章说明的内容，主要分为两个方面：一是具体事物，包括事物的状态、性质、功能和特征等；二是抽象事理，包括事物的本质、事物内部或事物之间的内在联系。
把握说明对象可先从标题入手，如果并无标题，那还得认真阅读文本?语段 ，逐段逐句排队、梳理，找出说明对象。接着还要重点把握说明对象的`特征。了解事物的特征，不能停留在表面现象上，而要了解事物内在的本质。把握事物的特征也可以从两个方面入手：
１、从标题着眼。有的标题在指出文章说明对象的同时，就指出其特征。如《雄伟的人民大会堂》一文，标题指出说明对象是“人民大会堂”，也指出其特征“雄伟”。
２、从分析材料入手。即逐段分析作者介绍了有关事物的哪一方面的特征，然后归纳小结。例如《中国石拱桥》一文中，“这种桥不但形式优美，而且结构坚固”和“我国的石拱桥有悠久的历史”两句，就点明了中国石拱桥的特点：形式优美、结构坚固、历史悠久。
