An Old Man cut himself a bundle of faggots in a wood and started to carry them home.He had a long way to go，and was tired out before he had got much more than half-way.Casting his burden on the ground，he called upon Death to come and release him from his life of toil.The words were scarcely out of his mouth when，much to his dismay,Death stood before him and professed his readiness to serve him.He was almost frightened out of his wits，but he had enough presence of mind to stammer out，“Good sir,ifyou’d be SO kind，pray help me up with my burden again.”

谁知道这个人家，婆婆竟有三个：一个婆婆，一个太婆婆，还有一个太太婆婆。
一个婆婆已难对付，何况有三个。
媳妇做的菜，婆婆嫌太淡，太婆婆嫌太咸，太太婆婆使白眼。
媳妇沏的茶，婆婆嫌太冷，太婆婆嫌太烫，太太婆婆不说话，直摇脑袋。
媳妇一空下来，婆婆叫她去绣花，太婆婆叫她去纺纱，太太婆婆叫她快去种瓜。不知听谁的好，急得团团转。
媳妇一天忙到晚，干得精疲力尽，没有听到一句好话。婆婆说她呆，太婆婆说她蠢，太太婆婆叹气说：“我家娶了个笨媳妇!”
巧姑娘竟变成笨媳妇，什么缘故?
——婆婆太多，媳妇难做。
