而为奴十二载也是一个关于黑奴历史的经典影片。主人公Solomon Northup本是一个自由人，以演奏小提琴为生，有一个妻子和两个孩子，生活其乐融融。不料他却被两个白人以马戏团表演伴奏所骗，去了华盛顿，一觉醒来却发现自己成了黑奴。被贩卖给了Ford先生后，过了一段平稳的日子，后来又因为反抗他的一个白人主子无奈只能被买给一个素有“黑奴终结者”的Epps先生，也开始了他漫长的黑暗的12年黑奴生活。他在12年的黑奴经历中，过着炼狱般的生活。他日复一日不眠不休的工作，却还要被主人鞭打，不能表露出自己是个受过教育的自由人，必须低声下气的生活，还要每天为自己的生命忧虑。每天晚上，躺在席子上，睁大眼睛望着这个残酷的世界，想着远在千里之外的家人，心酸无奈的留下眼泪。在此期间，也目睹了更多黑奴的悲剧，种植园主人Epps先生残暴成性，以虐待黑奴鞭打黑奴为乐。
当有黑奴因为承受不住工作的重压倒下时，只是用冷水把他泼醒，如果醒不来，就草草埋掉了事。而黑奴群体中也毫无性别之分。主人生气了，女黑奴也一样扒光衣服用皮鞭抽打至皮开肉绽。男女黑人一样在露天场地洗澡，甚至在在同一个屋檐下睡觉。人性的羞耻感自尊心被无情剥夺。长期的欺压鞭打，黑人们已经变得麻木，甚至是习惯了那种非人般的生活。也许对于黑人来说，自由都没了，肉体也遭受着无与伦比的痛苦，精神上的折磨他们也无力挣扎。当主人公Solomon被白人鞭打，被吊到树上一整天时，几乎没有别的黑人来拯救他，他们都是照常的生活，完全视为无物，不过令人感到安慰的是，还是有一个黑人小姑娘过来喂Solomon喝水，让他不至于饥渴而。当主人Epps先生欲欺奸Patsey时，她也只是痛苦的留下泪水，不能也不敢反抗。很多个值得深思的场景，都是如此的刻骨铭心。
整部影片充满了压抑，恐惧的气氛。黑人被剥夺人性成为只会工作不会思想的人肉机器，这违反了人权。而影片中贝斯先生帮助所罗门回归自由人的.情节乃是是影片最为激动人心的地方。最后所罗门满含热泪的拥抱，他的妻子。片尾由压抑沉重的音乐切换成轻松闲适的音乐，也让我们知道，世界并不会永恒黑暗，光明也许会迟到但不会缺席。影片中，声嘶力竭的呼号，暴力腥的压迫，撕心裂肺的情感纠葛，让很多人沉思不已，甚至是泪流满面。而影片中关于种族问题，人权问题以及社会变革等带来的问题也值得我们深思。
愿世界少一点黑暗，多一丝光芒。
