《夏目友人帐》主要讲述了男主人公夏目贵志拥有可以看到妖怪的特殊能力。因为父母双亡他的性格较为孤僻，并且由于他具有特殊的能力，他常辗转在于亲戚之间并被同龄人欺负。虽然他经历了许多不幸，但他依旧有好善良没有埋怨任何人。最终他被有好善良的藤原夫妇收养并进入高中。有一天，他被妖怪追赶躲进神社，不小心打破了一只强大妖怪斑的封印。并牵涉到了他祖母夏目玲子的遗物—一本同妖怪签订的`契约书。之后，这只强大的妖怪平时便变成猫的样子待在夏目身边保护他，但是他的条件是夏目后要把这本契约书给它。但在此之前夏目决定尽其所能把契约书上的名字还给妖怪们让它们得到自由。由此，一个个温馨、感人、惊险的故事就此展开。

有一天，不知谁家的狗走进了外婆家。小灰见了，眼睛紧盯着对方，竖起耳朵，耷拉下尾巴，如临大敌。那咄咄逼人的目光，似乎在训斥那不速之客，又好像在守卫着自己的地盘。还没等我唤住，小灰就和那条狗斗了起来。只见它抬起前腿，扑到那比它高一个头的大狗身上，张开嘴巴，去咬对方的脖颈。那大狗仗着身高的优势，一甩头就把小灰甩在地上。小灰不甘示弱，迅速爬起冲上去。看着小灰一副不要命的样子，我连忙唤住它，赶走那条大狗。可是小灰已经被咬出了丝。看着它受伤的眼神，我的心里真不是滋味。
可好景不长，小灰只陪伴了我4年多，就突然离开了我。那天，我在外婆家过完生日后，要回家了，外婆送我到门口，也许是忘了关门，也许是小灰也想出来送我，从此，小灰就不见了。尽管我们找遍了所有地方，也等了很久，可是小灰一直没有回来过。妈妈肯定地说：“不会回来了，被坏人抓走，了，卖了。”妈妈的话还没说完，我的眼泪就像流水一样哗哗地流了下来。我为小灰的不幸遭遇感到难过，但我更恨那些抓狗，狗，卖狗肉的人。请你们不要再这样狗了，要知道你们的不仅仅是一条条无辜的狗，更是许许多多我们忠诚的伙伴，一条条鲜活的生命。当你们用一些药调好了和在狗粮中，让狗上当时，你们是否曾想过，狗是多么信任我们，相信我们人类是不会伤害它们，可谁知，你们却用狗对我们的信任而去伤害它们。如果再这样下去，迟早有一天，我们会失去人类最忠实的朋友，最忠诚的伙伴的。我多么希望人类的屠狗、吃狗的行为能早一点结束。
