乞丐生气地说：“你忍心看一个只有一只手的乞丐搬东西吗？”
女主人什么也没说，俯身搬起砖来。
乞丐怔住了，他第一次感觉到了自已的`渺小。终于，他俯下身子，用他那惟一的一只手搬起砖来。两个小时后，虽然累得气喘吁吁，脸上身上都是灰，但总算把那些砖搬完了。
这时候，女主人递给乞丐一条毛巾，乞丐用过之后，白毛巾变成了黑毛巾。女主人随后又递给乞丐20元钱，并说：“拿去吧，这是你的工钱！这是你靠自已劳动得到的！”乞丐眼中充满了泪花。
他感激地对女主人说：“谢谢你的帮助，这条毛巾也留给我作纪念吧。”说完他深深地鞠一躬，就上路了。
几天后，又有一个乞丐来到这庭院。女主人把他领到屋后，指着砖说：“把砖搬到屋前就给你20元钱。”这位双手健全的乞丐却走开了。
主人的孩子不解地问母亲：“上次你叫乞丐把砖从屋前搬到屋后，这次你又叫乞丐从屋后搬到屋前。你到底想把砖放在屋后，还是放在屋前？”
主人对自已的孩子说：“其实砖放在哪里都一样，可是对乞丐来说就不一样了。”
孩子点了点头，似乎明白了母亲的用意。
若干年后，一位西装革履，气度不凡的人来到了妇人家里。美中不足的是这个人只有一只左臂。
他对女主人说：“我就是很多年前为你搬砖的那个乞丐，是你让我找到了自身的价值，现在我是一家公司的总经理了。”
