小黑熊的妈妈生了两天重病，就去世了。
孤苦伶仃的小黑熊非常想念自己惟一的亲人，他的黑熊外婆。
他很小很小的时候，见过外婆。那还是在自己的家乡，那个名叫苹果山村的'地方。后来，他和妈妈远离家乡，再也没有回去看过外婆。
他不知那个苹果山村在哪里，他也不知道外婆叫什么名字，长得什么模样，现在是不是还在世上。
小黑熊非常想念家乡，想念外婆。他一定要找到惟一的亲人外婆。
小黑熊带上干粮，背着心爱的乐器吉他，出发去寻找家乡。
他一路上唱着妈妈从小教他的歌，和他自己编的歌。歌声使他结识了许多朋友，他们都愿意帮助他，给他指点去苹果山村的路。
当他来到苹果山村的时候，正是苹果成熟的季节，山村四周的树上挂满了苹果。山村里错落有致地分布着一幢幢小木头房子。
小黑熊不知自己的黑熊外婆住哪一幢房子。再说，外婆根本不认识他，怎么知道他就是自己的小外孙呢?
小黑熊有点发愣。
这时，他的手无意间碰到了背着的吉他，琴弦发出一声低低的声音。
小黑熊猛地想起来，自己小时候曾学过一首歌，这是妈妈教的，妈妈说，这首歌还是她小时候，外婆教她的。
小黑熊面对一排小木头房子，他在一棵大苹果树下，拨动琴弦，唱了起来：
当苹果和月亮低语
到处飘荡着
浓浓的香气
这时候——
我的家乡多么美丽……
不知为什么，像有谁施了魔法一样。
每一幢小木头房子的窗子都打开了，探出一个个脑袋，有小兔子的，有小松鼠的，有豪猪的，还有青蛙和小鸭子的……
其中还有一位黑熊奶奶，她听着听着流下了眼泪。
黑熊奶奶颤巍巍地跑了出来，问小黑熊：“是谁教会你唱这首歌的?”
“是我妈妈小时候向我外婆学的。以后妈妈又教会了我这首歌。”小黑熊回答说。
“那，你就是我的小外孙小苹果了?”外婆激动地问。
自从妈妈去世后，小黑熊第一次听见有人叫他的小名“小苹果”。
他搂着外婆哭了起来。
这时，山村里的所有居民都围了上来，他们为小黑熊用这么聪明的办法，找到了自己的外婆而高兴。大伙儿都要小黑熊教他们唱这首歌，因为这是一首他们家乡的歌。将来，无论走得多远，无论相隔多久，他们都能凭这首歌找到家乡，找到亲人。
于是，在这黄昏时的苹果山村，小黑熊弹起吉他，全山村的居民一起唱了起来：
