南北朝时期，宇文泰和侯景交战的时候，宇文泰的坐骑被箭射中，受到惊吓而四处狂奔，把宇文泰从马上摔了下来。这时东魏的士兵已经越来越近，而宇文泰身边的侍卫已经被打散了，受了伤的宇文泰躺在地上，眼看就要被东魏士兵给抓住。这时，宇文泰手下的大将李穆在旁边，跳下马来用鞭子抽打宇文泰，边打边骂道：“你这个无能的败兵，你的主子在哪里？为什么你一个人躺在这里？”东魏的士兵见状，没有怀疑这是个大人物就匆匆过去了，李穆把马让给了宇文泰，和他一起逃跑，宇文泰由此逃过一劫。
司马繇也好，宇文泰也罢，在危急时刻，手下人的鞭打，麻痹了对方，使得对方解除了疑心，放松了警惕，从而得以逃脱抓捕，不失为一种智慧处事方式。
