故事发生在上个世纪七八十年代，国家刚刚恢复高考，天生丽质的何文慧考上了大学，全校只有她一个人考上了，就连平时成绩很好的同学李建斌也没有考上，考上大学在那个年代就意味着从此平步青云、从此一路高歌、从此高人一等，就像天上的星星，被全国人民捧着，仰望着。与此同时，有为青年李建斌向文慧表白了，给她看了他的\'本，文慧默然接受，如此，我们的文慧不仅收获了人生，还收获了爱情。同学们纷纷来向文慧道贺，文慧请他们吃饭但是她只有二十块钱，这远远不够同学们一顿饭的钱，好同学谢娜介绍二食堂的厨子刘洪昌给文慧认识，刘洪昌帮助文慧避免了这次尴尬，文慧决心通过暑假打工挣钱还给刘洪昌，每天挣一块钱还一块钱，像交租子一样。
也正因为文慧家里穷才有了下面跌宕起伏的精彩剧情，38集电视连续剧欣然展开……何文慧，家里的长女，下面还有一个妹妹文远，两个弟弟文涛、文达，父亲早逝，妈妈先前在一家制衣厂上班，就在文慧考上大学的同时，妈妈的眼睛也不行了，医治无效成了盲人，文慧百般无赖只得放弃了上大学，从此代替妈妈照顾这个家，即使冒天下之大不韪，她毅然决然的做出了这个决定，可是文慧还是太年轻，一个人根本挑不起这副沉重的担子。随着故事情节的展开，他与李建斌分手，刘洪昌的一片真诚终于俘获的她的芳心，但她和刘洪昌的爱情发展到高潮，准备生第二个孩子的时候，年轻的生命突然凋零，整个故事陷入低谷，可是电视剧才放一半。在何文慧不长的生命历程中，给观众的感觉除了美好，我想更多的是~懂事。当她同李建斌分手后，答应和刘洪昌交往时，她不知所措了，经过谢娜的一番游说，她更加迷茫了，他甚至不知道她和刘洪昌之间的感情叫不叫爱情，她去找俊玲姐述说心中的苦恼，经过俊玲姐的开导，她终于理解了自己的爱情。在和刘洪昌结婚后，越不过少女心理的羞涩，不准洪昌碰她，经过妈妈的指点也终于悟了，原来男人也是需要被爱、被心疼的，遂主动坐到刘洪昌的怀抱。
刘洪昌，男主角，父亲亡故，上有哥哥、嫂子，王翠兰的次子。在当时的社会环境当中老刘家虽算不上富裕，但至少衣食无忧。在剧中你会发现两个极端，在家里他被妈妈宠着，哥嫂惯着，想干什么就干什么，好不潇洒；可是结婚后来到何家，就是当牛做马不说，还要遭受不少人的白眼和挤兑。他对文慧的爱是发自内心的，所谓爱其实就是一种责任，他心甘情愿承受这种责任，无论它有多么沉重。随着文慧的离世，文涛人入狱，文远赴深圳打工，文达去读大学，再是丈母娘于秋花的去世，我们可爱的洪昌却一直坚守着这个家，不管妈妈、哥嫂怎样的规劝和杨麦香热情的爱意都无法改变这份坚守，看到这里肯定大多数观众会反感，会认为这是一种冥顽不灵，一种固执，直到最后，心中迷雾才被揭开，原来这叫做忠诚！所以大结局，我们才会看到他那张久违的笑脸。

纵观全剧所有的悲剧都是何文远引起的，真恨不得扇她几巴掌，先是和社会上的小流氓鬼混，后来被xx，文涛为姐姐报仇人把自己送进了监狱，文慧也因此摔倒流产而强救无效亡，最让人气愤的是她竟然嫁给了恩人俊玲姐的老公......
小说毕竟是小说，现实中不可能有刘洪昌这样的男人，也不可能有杨满香、高俊玲这样的女人。刘洪昌因为对何文慧的爱奉献了自己的一生，杨满香因为爱刘洪昌等了一生，高俊玲对丈夫白青山给自己的几十万却无动于衷......
但现实生活中像何文远、白青山之辈却大有人在，何文远为了金钱和要面子的`白青山勾搭在一起。高俊玲对爱的要求很简单，她对白青山说：我不图什么，你总有老的一天，能为你做顿饭，我就知足了；钱可以换回一切，但唯独一样换不回，那就是我高俊玲的骨气！
