陈姓最早出自妫姓，是舜帝的后裔。据《通志氏族略》记载：周武王灭商朝纣王以后，建立周朝以后，找到舜的后人「陈胡公 妫满 」，封他在陈(今河南省淮阳县这个地方，建立了「陈国」。胡公满传至10世孙妫完，陈国内乱，陈厉公的儿子妫完怕株连自己，出奔到齐国，以故国为氏，称陈氏。
春秋时有孔子弟子之一陈元。秦末农民起义领袖陈胜。汉朝初年的陈平曾辅佐刘邦。汉末有“建安七子”之一的大文学家陈琳。西汉后期的陈汤。王莽统治时期的陈遵，被封为嘉威侯。三国时有陈登，曾与父合谋离间吕布与袁术。晋朝陈寿的《三国志》是《二十四史》中最受欢迎的史书之一。南北朝时期则有名将陈庆之、陈伯之等，而这一时期最著名的陈姓人就是南朝陈的建立者陈霸先了。
陈姓是人口列全国第五位的大姓，约占全国汉族人口4.53%。在湖南韶山，保存着有一米多厚的陈氏族谱，足足50卷之长。
