背景知识在阅读中的作用是至关重要的，它可以由老师来灌输，也可以通过阅读材料本身给出。背景知识是一个复杂的概念，包含专业知识、社会文化知识等。因此，在教学中除了要介绍相关专业、文化知识以外，社会背景也不能忽视，因为阅读中造成误解的往往就是由于欠缺相关背景知识引起的。同时要求学生在平时要阅读不同领域的书籍来拓宽知识面，多积累文化背景知识。在进行阅读教学时，教师可在讲课前为学生提供一些背景知识，增强学生的感性经验。如高中课文中涉及中美文化交流所碰到的问题，围绕着中国人和英美国家的人在访友、道谢、恭维时的不同做法，谈到美国人习惯于从小到大、从特殊到普遍的思维方式，如写信就是一个例子。另外美国人个性独立、不拘礼节、言谈直率也是众人皆知的，以及英国人的绅士风度等。学生头脑中有了这些感性认识再理解相关文章就比较容易了。

Jane Eyre is a first-person narrative of the title character, a small, plain-faced, intelligent and honest English orphan. The novel goes through five distinct stages: Janes childhood at Gateshead, where she is abused by her aunt and cousins; her education at Lowood School, where she acquires friends and role models but also suffers privations; her time as the governess of Thornfield Manor, where she falls in love with her Byronic employer, Edward Rochester; her time with the Rivers family at Marshs End (or Moor House and Morton, where her cold clergyman-cousin St John Rivers proposes to her; and her reunion with and marriage to her beloved Rochester at his house of Ferndean. Partly autobiographical, the novel abounds with social criticism and sinister gothic elements.

阅读是英语教学中的重要环节，提高学生阅读理解能力也一直是英语教学的重要目标。阅读理解是一种复杂的认知心理过程，它要求学生利用已经掌握的阅读方法技能，领会作者通过语言符号表达的信息，从而达到与作者进行思想交流的目的。我在日常教学实践中不断总结，分析影响阅读理解的因素，并在此基础上总结应对方法。
影响阅读理解的因素很多，在这一认知活动中，学生的语言基础、学习方法、文化背景知识、阅读习惯、智力水平、兴趣爱好和个性特征等都是影响阅读理解的因素。语言知识包括词汇、语法、语篇等不同层次，是理解语言的基础。要教给学生在阅读时不能一个词一个词地理解，有效的阅读，应该更多地关注关键词和语意群。背景知识是影响阅读理解的另一个重要因素。学生的已有知识、经历、概括能力、理解模式、情感、情绪以及其他种种非智力因素构成了学生的认知模式，这些因素相互影响，从而使学生在阅读理解能力方面存在着差异。我们教师就要通过有效教学逐渐缩小这种差距，我在教学中总结出以下几点体会:

南开中学的创办者张伯苓16岁时以优异的成绩考入北洋水师学堂，学习驾驶。毕业后，他参加了“甲午海战”，但军舰一出海就被击沉，这对他触动很大。1899年英国强租我国威海卫军港，张伯苓亲眼看见，第一天在港口升起的清朝国旗第二天就降下来了。强烈的爱国心促使他毅然退出海军，回到天津筹办学校。他四处奔走，筹集资金，终于在1907年办起了南开学校。张伯苓一生全力办教学为国家培养了大批的人才。
分析：只有祖国的富强，个人才有尊严。为此，张伯苓不余遗力地创办学校，希望能以教育培养振兴中华的人才，其爱国热情让人感动。
