一位老人，孤身一人不愿回原籍与兄妹团聚，却甘愿心系翠湖，情定鸥鸟，视鸥为人生的伴侣，几乎用尽300多元的退休工资，矢志不渝，风雨无阻，天天买食物来喂鸥。与鸥相伴的冬天，使他找回了幸福和欢笑，使他忘却孤独寂寞的寒冷。天长地久的鸥鸟情深，让每个冬天飞抵昆明的红嘴鸥，成为他唯一的寄托。每当红嘴鸥“驾临”昆明时，老人便欣喜若狂，每天徒步十多公里进城给它们喂食，和它们嬉戏，一面喂鸥，一面亲切地呼唤着它们的名字(是他为鸥起的各种昵称，这些可爱的小精灵，有的就落在他的肩上、脚下、手上，有的在他四周翻飞……一画家闻睹此情景，感动之余给老人画了幅像。1998年初冬，当红嘴鸥又准时如约而至时，却再也找不到老人的身影，因为，老人已经驾鹤西去!于是，画家就带来了海鸥老人的画像，把它放在一棵树下，面向湖面，让老人再看看他魂牵梦绕的小精灵，让他再一次呼唤着它们的名字。以此来延续老人那份未了的情缘。而此时!红嘴鸥仿佛真的有灵再现，看到老人画像后纷纷飞来，奇迹般地整齐排列成行，肃立于老人遗像前，良久之后一阵悲鸣才飞走了!……游人们目睹此情此景，莫不动情动容，纷纷落泪。也许!老人的灵魂此刻已化为一只红嘴鸥，带着多少遗憾和牵挂，飞到遥远的西伯利亚，和他昼思夜想的候鸟们，一起去寻找那一片与冬隔绝的天堂……
