在大半部分时间里，《白日焰火》的真正主角并不是“黑色电影”(Film Noir所规定的失败警察，或者蛇蝎美人，而是“冰”。一切爱与、罪与罚都与“冰”相关：人的冰刀，冰冻的尸块，离别时窗上的冰花，甚至冷清如冰的女主角等等。冰为什么如此重要?它有什么功能?
提起“黑色电影”，我们通常会关注电影如何呈现黑暗，而且是有层次感的黑暗：墙上的投影，百页窗的阴影，方法不一而足。可我们容易忽略一个基本事实，即黑与白的共生关系。影史中成功的黑暗场景不胜枚举，可《白日焰火》却反其道而行之，以白写黑，刁奕男用丰富的“白”展现了优秀的艺术直觉。作为本片的线索元素，“冰”有两种基本属性：色彩和温度。从色彩上说，冰是诸多黑暗场景的反光板，时而明媚，时而冷峻，静默如谜，不可捉摸;而从温度上说，冰是人物情绪的集中投射——纯粹如爱欲，绝决如命运。当导演把“冰”处理成一种情绪氛围时，它就不再是简单的道具，而是整部电影的灵魂所在。
接下来的问题是，电影如何“用冰取火”?能不能把自己辛苦建构的坚冰打碎，并用它取暖，这是每个创作者都必须面临的困境。一句话：“冰”能不能烧着，这就是普通黑色电影到金熊奖的距离。
幸好有焰火。
当白日焰火点燃，整部电影获得了升华，故事第一次有了温度。那些飞溅的焰火似乎对囚车充满敌意，它们从天而降，如天女散花，非常攻击性地把警察们围困。我想，这种攻击性是在表达一种对抗——如果“焰火”是反秩序(警察/女贼的情欲，那么焰火想要燃烧的又是什么?应该是秩序本身。
从女贼瞥见那件旧皮氅开始，她的情欲开始吞没正义。她明知道犯罪证据已经落入警察手里，她该逃的，可她遵从情欲的指引，继续和对方约会，结局可以预想。摩天轮一夜春宵后，女贼涂起红唇点亮生活，男警官却佝偻着身子盘算着背叛。当女贼被审讯时，男警官在天桥底下窥见了“后果自负”四个大字，如此有力的嘲讽，这才有了廖凡独舞时的失魂与卑琐，如背景音乐所唱：“每当我走近梦乡，你在我身旁;每当我走出梦乡，你不知去向。”
灿烂如焰火，虚幻如焰火，这就是迷人的情欲。最后一个镜头，警察为女贼点起焰火，情欲赢了，正义输了。至于出卖爱情获得身份的张自力，就像那匹误入歧途的马，他终要回到风雪中，寻找自己性爱之旅的下一站。
品特说，白，是为了让黑更黑。《白日焰火》做到了。
