从前，嫦娥的玉兔并不乖巧，非常的顽皮。虽然嫦娥很疼爱它，但为了不让它给自己惹事，每当自己出门时，就把玉兔锁在广寒宫里，不让它乱跑。以前的夜空中也没有星星的，只有一个永远都是圆的月亮，也就是王母娘娘的月亮花瓶。
一天，嫦娥出门时忘了关门，玉兔就偷偷地溜了出来。它到处乱蹦，一不小心误入了王母娘娘的寝室，一眼就看到了月亮花瓶和一条用星星穿起来的闪闪发光的巨大项链。玉兔从来都没见过这些东西。玉兔激动不已，直向那两样东西跳去，可是脚下一滑，摔倒了，撞碎了月亮花瓶，还扯断了用星星穿起来的项链。这下，天空中的'圆月变成了月牙儿，到处布满了亮晶晶的星星。玉兔被吓得不知所措。正巧，这时王母娘娘回来了，她看到了这一切，大发雷庭。因为这两件可是她的宝贝啊！王母娘娘召来嫦娥，斥责她对玉兔管教不严。之后，王母娘娘想让她们将功补过，命玉兔去穿好星星项链，命嫦娥去拼合月亮花瓶，只还许像平常人一样劳动，不许用其他神法。嫦娥、玉兔都想要好好把握住这个机会，所以每一片碎片，每一颗星星，她们都不放过，捡得很认真，穿得很认真。玉兔每穿上一颗星星，天空中的星星就会少一些，嫦娥每捡起拼上一片碎片，天空中的月亮就会圆一些。好不容易花瓶拼合了，项链穿好了，天空中的月牙儿成了满月了，星星没有了，但是，这两件宝物有灵性，不用神法，是还原不了的，所以没过多久，花瓶就又碎了，项链就又断了，天空中又部满了星星，原本又圆又亮月亮不见了……
