妈妈过世后，每天早上上学前我都会去父亲那里看一下。他非常虚弱，行动迟缓，但总是为我准备好一杯刚榨出的桔子汁，放在厨房的餐桌上，并附上一张没有签名的字条：“给你的。”在我的记忆中，父亲从来不曾说过“我爱你”之类的话。小时侯，我问过妈妈：“为什么爸爸不爱我?”妈妈皱起眉头：“谁说他不爱你啦?”“他从不说爱我，”我抱怨说。妈妈怜爱地看着我：“他也没对我说过。但是，你看，他那么努力地工作，为我们买来衣服、食物，并为我们交房租。这就是你父亲表达爱的方式，通过行动告诉我们：他爱我们，爱这个家。”然后，母亲握住我的肩膀问：“你懂了吗?”我若有所悟地点着头。我脸上接受了这个说法，但心里还没接受;我依旧渴望父亲用双臂拥紧我，对我说他爱我。
父亲开了个小型的废旧金属回收厂。我放学后，常在他工作的地方晃荡，希望父亲叫我帮忙，然后再表扬我，可他从不让我帮忙。他的工作对于一个小男孩而言实在是太危险了，母亲一直很为父亲的工作担心，怕他受伤。
父亲用手把废旧金属“喂”入一个装置中，那设备看起来像一对巨大的剪刀，切削起金属来，就像屠夫砍排骨一般快捷。刀片比父亲的身体还厚。如果父亲不是适时地投入金属就很可能受伤。
“你为什不多请个人帮你干那活?”有一天晚上，母亲一边问父亲，一边按摩父亲酸痛的肩膀。
“那你为什么不请个厨师呢?”父亲问。很难得地给了母亲一个微笑。
母亲站直了，手放在背后。“怎么啦?艾克?难道你不喜欢我做的饭菜了吗?”“我当然喜欢!但是如果我请得起帮手，那你也应该请得起厨师!”父亲笑了，我第一次感到父亲还有那么点儿幽默感。
父亲工作时那个用于切割厚型钢盘和钢柱的乙炔火炬也非常危险。它发出的嘶嘶声比蒸汽火车头发出的声音还响，它切割时总会飞出成千上万熔化了的金属小块儿，这些小块围绕着父亲，就像一群发怒的萤火虫。
父亲戴着厚重的皮手套、深色的护目镜和一顶宽沿帽。一天，飞溅的火花点燃了他的袜子，回到家时，他的脚踝都打起了泡。母亲为他涂上黄色软膏。“你怎么就不能再小心些，艾克?”母亲心疼地责问他。
“你要我怎么做呢?整天站在水盘里工作吗?”父亲故作轻松地说。
他们笑了起来。我不懂父亲怎么能拿这样的事开玩笑。后来，我才意识到那是父亲不让母亲担忧的最好办法。
一天早上，父亲祈祷完后，举起手臂，轻声问道：“主啊，你可不可以让我的日子过得舒适些?”那一瞬间，任劳任怨、不以苦乐为念的父亲看起来是那样脆弱，我真想紧紧地拥抱他、保护他。
多年后，我每天去看望父亲时，都那么做了。通常，喝完父亲为我准备的桔子汁后，我会走过去拥抱他，并对他说：“我爱你，爸爸。”父亲从不告诉我他是否喜欢我的拥抱;我拥抱他时，他的脸上也没有任何表情。
一天早上，因时间紧迫，我喝完桔子汁就径直向门口走去。父亲走到我面前，问道：“走了?”“有什么事吗?”我问道，心里很清楚他问话的含义。
“就这么走了?”他重复了一遍，交叉着双臂，眼睛四处看，就是不看我。
我特别用力地拥抱了他一下。现在是说出我早就想说的话的时候了。
“爸爸，我已经15岁了。你还从没对我说过你爱我呢!”父亲从我身边走开。他拿起空玻璃杯，把它洗干净，放好。
“你告诉过别人，说你爱我，”我说，“但我没有听你亲口说过。”父亲看起来很不自在，非常地不自在。
我向他走得更近：“爸爸，我要你告诉我你爱我。”父亲退后了一步，嘴闭得更紧了。他好像要说话，结果只是摇了摇头。
“说吧!”我大声喊道。
“是!我爱你!”父亲终于说出来了，他的手颤抖着，像受伤的鸟儿。就在那一刻，我见到父亲的眼睛里有泪光在闪动，这是我一生中从未见过的。
我站在父亲面前，吃惊得说不出话来。父亲是那样地爱我，以至于把这份爱说出口都让他哭泣。母亲是对的，在我生命中的每一天，父亲都以他的`行动告诉我他有多爱我。
“我懂了，爸爸，”我说，“我懂了。
