小鸟和老鹰是好朋友，它们都有远大的抱负。在太平洋东岸生活久了，它们决定飞往太平洋的\'西岸，开拓一片新天地。主意一定，它们就开始做准备，它们采取分头行动的办法，想看看谁会先到达目的地。据说，从太平洋东岸飞到西岸需半个月时间，在路上需多次休息、吃饭、睡觉，没有充分准备是不行的。
老鹰准备了四件东西：一个大包裹，里面装满半个月的口粮；一个大水壶，里面装满水；一只小木筏，是用来休息的；一个急救包，里面装有各种药品，用于不时之需。老鹰对这些东西很满意，它觉得，这样飞越太平洋会万无一失。
当老鹰背起这些东西试飞的时候，出乎意料的事发生了：这些东西压得它气喘吁吁，它无论如何也飞不起来。老鹰想扔掉一些东西，但在它看来，哪一件东西都非常重要，非带不可。而带着这些东西却飞不起来，它陷入一种深深的矛盾中不能自拔，心情烦躁，不知如何是好。
就在老鹰不知怎么办时，小鸟却早已上路了，它只带了一件物品，那就是一根小树枝。飞得累了，它就把树枝放在海面上，站在树枝上休息；饿了，就放下树枝站在上面捉鱼吃；困了，就放下树枝站在上面睡觉。半个月过去了，小鸟如愿以偿地飞到了太平洋西岸，那里的大好风景尽收眼底，它为此陶醉了。它如愿以偿地获得了一片新天地。
简单让小鸟获得了成功，而老鹰却不懂得这个道理，所以只能在东岸患得患失，它想得越多离成功越远。
