您好！我是绩溪县龙川小学六年级的学生胡俊懋。自从学了课文《彩色的翅膀》后，我就非常敬佩您。您为了让宝石岛上的西瓜开花能结瓜，探亲回家从黑龙江带回蝴蝶，让昆虫为西瓜授粉。
岛上的自然环境十分恶劣，没有土地，没有蔬菜，没有昆虫。两年前，你们来到宝石岛，在岩石下、小路旁，垒出一块块“海岛田”，把西瓜籽种下土地，瓜苗出土了，瓜秧拖蔓了，开了一朵朵小黄花。可是一个瓜也没结。有些战士灰心了，而一位雷达兵懂得农业知识，知道西瓜开花要授粉，而岛上没有昆虫授粉。第二年瓜秧开花，战士们给每朵雌花进行人工授粉，果然结了不少小瓜。谁料一阵暴雨过后，巨浪扑上小岛，岛上只剩下了一个小瓜。你们像抚养婴儿似的照看小瓜。奇迹出现了，这个岛上成熟了第一个西瓜。你们是多么喜悦、激动、自豪，你们付出的汗水换来了甘甜的.西瓜。如果你们当初放弃了，就不会有岛上第一个西瓜，也就尝不到甘甜的西瓜。
学了这篇课文，我很受启发。在我的生活中也有类似的事情。记得五年级的时候，老师选我参加汉字录入。老师要我先背五笔打字的口诀，背了几天才把口诀背下。背了口诀还要学会拆字。那时，我几乎要放弃了，心想：拆字可真难啊！我还是放弃吧！可是，老师鼓励我们说：“要记住五笔口诀，多练习五笔打字，就会有感觉了。”我坚持不懈地练习，白天早上，到老师办公室去练习打字，晚上放学以后，老师让我们到电脑室练习。功夫不负有心人，我参加宣城市汉字录入比赛，获得了一等奖。
学过课文《彩色的翅膀》，我明白只要坚持就会有收获。我佩服您，佩服岛上热爱祖国的战士们。在这里我祝福你们身体健康，工作顺利！

Founder of Labor Day
More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance， there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.
Some records show that Peter J. McGuire， general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor， was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold."
But Peter McGuire"s place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire， a machinist， not Peter McGuire， founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire， later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson， N.J， proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.
