有一户人家住着婆媳两人，儿子经常外出，很长时间才能回家一次。
这个婆婆在家专横跋扈，经常对媳妇横挑鼻子竖挑眼，媳妇不能申辩，更不敢反抗，总是偷偷地伤心。幸亏隔壁有位好心的大妈，十分同情这位媳妇，常常安慰这位媳妇并暗中帮助她。
一次，婆婆外出走亲戚，下午回到家里，忽然发现家里的肉少了。婆婆心里顿时来了气，她怎么想也觉得是媳妇偷吃了。于是不问青红皂白就劈头盖脑地骂起来：“你这个好吃懒做的`贱女人，我不在家你就无法无天了，竟敢在家偷吃东西！”
媳妇觉得实在冤枉，忍不住说：“老天爷在上，我偷没偷吃东西，他看得最清楚。”
还没等媳妇说完，婆婆早就气得要跳起来，她指着媳妇大声喊道：“这还了得，敢顶撞我！算是我冤枉了你，我瞎了眼睛！我家养不起你这个媳妇了，你马上给我滚回你娘家去，我家不要你了！”就这样，婆婆把媳妇给休弃了。
媳妇无可奈何，只得服从婆婆的命令。她在回娘家之前，去向隔壁的大妈告别，哭着向大妈讲了这件事。大妈听了，很替这位媳妇难过，但大妈也知道那位婆婆的为人，如果现在马上去替媳妇解释，恐怕婆婆是不会听的。于是大妈安慰了媳妇一阵后，对她说：“你先慢慢地走，我这就去想办法让你婆婆把你叫回来。”媳妇擦了擦眼泪，慢慢朝村外走去。
大妈待媳妇一走，马上在家里搜寻了一把乱麻，她将乱麻扎在一个小棍上做了一个火引子，然后到这个媳妇家里去找婆婆借火。
婆婆问：“现在不是做饭的时候，借火做什么？”大妈对婆婆说：“我家的狗不知从哪里叼来一块肉，几条狗为争这块肉，互相咬得很凶，我想借个火回去治治它们。”
婆婆一听，恍然大悟，肉原来是被狗叼走了。她心里感到有几分愧疚。因此赶紧找来一个人，让他马上去追赶媳妇，把她接回来。
这则寓言告诉我们，一个有心计的人，在解决人与人之间的矛盾纠纷时，必须讲究策略。要想弄明真相、息事宁人，既要抓住问题的症结，又不可急于求成。
