总体来说，影片是成功的，从这部小小的影片中折射了生活的大道理：只要经过努力，不论你的身份如何，地位怎样，你都会成功的；反之，不能经过辛苦的努力，任何幻想总是要破灭的。
在这部影片中，喜剧明星周星驰扮演了一个全新的角色——落魄的民工，为了自己的儿子不再受穷，加工加点挣钱为了儿子在贵族学校好好学习。影片中反复说的一句话是：虽然我们穷，只要我们不说谎话，不拿不属于我们的东西，学到知识，做一个对社会有用的人。我想就是这部影片要告诉我们的所谓中心思想吧。
影片总体是成功的，但也存在一些明显的瑕疵：
一、当周先生第一次见老师时，那份镇定自若是民工不可能有的心态。试想一个落魄的民工在见但贵族学校的`女老师的时候，局促和不安才是真实的样子，怎么会那样自信呢？
二、当周先生发现儿子撒谎打儿子的时候。一个人很激动的时候打人还会慢慢寻找工具吗？肯定是什么顺手就用什么了，还会很理智满慢找工具么？
三、第二次见老师的时候。应该说周先生是有一种解脱的意味的，那么很随便就抓住漂亮女老师的手，显得突然而以外，不合情理；
四、当七仔为了救周先生而失去生命，周先生用电击救七仔的场景。作为没有什么知识的民工还知道用电击来刺激心脏也不合情理；
五、周先生复活的表现。似乎是为了表示周星星的喜剧般招牌动作和表情，为漂亮女老师献玫瑰花显得突兀而画蛇添足，也与民工的身份不符。
