该报告汇总了来自96个国家的240位专家的研究结果。报告指出，全球20％的珊瑚礁已经遭到无法逆转的'严重破坏，而另外50％的珊瑚礁也接近崩溃边缘。如果不采取行动的话，全球变暖将导致全球珊瑚礁的最终亡。气候变化正在导致海水变暖，而这会造成海水酸度增加。科学家们预测，像发生在1998年的波及全球16％的大面积珊瑚礁被漂白的事件，在未来50年里会时常发生。
当海水变热时，珊瑚会释放体内的海藻，而这就导致珊瑚礁被漂白，从而导致珊瑚礁亡或者退化。同样，溶解在海水里的二氧化碳的浓度的增加将导致海水酸度增加，而这将减缓石灰化———即珊瑚礁形成的速度。有关专家指出，到本世纪中叶，二氧化碳的排放量可能会达到目前的两倍，珊瑚礁的石灰化程度可能要降低40％。

世界自然基金会全球海洋项目总监西蒙克利普博士表示：要想保护珊瑚礁，各国政府不仅需要减少二氧化碳排放量，还需要建立海洋保护区，以保证珊瑚不受到任何形式的威胁。珊瑚礁每年的生态服务价值超过300亿美元，我们不能因为气候变化或其他原因而承受如此大的社会和经济价值的损失。2004年世界珊瑚礁状况报告显示，近期得到保护的珊瑚礁的状况正在好转，这给世界各地的珊瑚礁的未来带来些许希望。
珊瑚礁主要分布在南、北纬度30°之间的热带浅海环境中，总面积达1000万平方公里，其中以太平洋的中部和西部、澳大利亚的东北沿岸、印度洋的西部及大西洋的西部百慕大至巴西一带的海区为最多。
