以前，西溪湿地由于人口剧增，湿地里由以农民为主，而农民里养猪的人又超过了百分之七十，猪就有近两万多头，人们又将猪粪倒入水中，就是因为这样，导致了水的质量变差，湿地的生态功能有了严重而明显的损伤。还 有就是人文景观造成较大的破坏，因为没有严格保护和系统管理，文化古迹流失相当严重，先人遗留下来的诗词、碑刻都散落流失了。
现在，西溪湿地进行了严格保护措施，让湿地变得漂亮起来了。湿地的水变得清澈见底了，能看见许多小鱼在水中欢快地游来游去。鸟儿也在枝头高唱，仿佛在说：“湿地终于变漂亮了！”树儿也挺着腰板，精神抖擞的，好像一个个士兵守护着西溪湿地！花儿们也不甘示弱，有的欣然怒放；有的`还 是花骨朵儿；还 有的含苞欲放。当然花儿也很香哦！有的花香淡淡的；有的花香是浓郁的；还 有的花香让人闻了心旷神怡！人们也更加爱护西溪湿地了，再也不将猪的粪便倒入水中，游客们也不乱扔垃圾了。
