第二天，鸡刚鸣，长官的副官——一个又矮又胖的少尉，敲着个铜面盆，冲进士兵们的寝室叫早，并对赖在床上不可起来的予以“掀床处理”不出五分钟，全体士兵便已穿戴完毕来到了军营中央的空地上，当然这其中也包括木兰。这是士兵们看见场地上摆着各式各样的兵器，有斧、矛、棒，甚至还有吕布曾用过的方天画戟，这时，昨天那位点名的长官，身穿盔甲，身后跟随着两个提矛的卫兵，来到了众兵面前，颇有威严的说到：“今天我们进行基本武器训练。”一下子，整个列队，就像炸开了锅，几个激动的新兵蛋子又蹦又跳，而长官却立刻阴着脸，指着其中一个并勾了勾手指让他来到自己面前，命令到：“你给我绕着军营跑四圈，再加俯卧撑四百个。”于是那可怜的家伙便低着头开始了漫长的体罚。哇！原来这边要求如此严格，木兰心想。这时，那个矮个子副官带着一队人跑了过来，大伙儿一看才发现，副官后面那一队人当中竟有一条长的像龙柱一样的东西，只见长官回过头，和副官说了些什么，他们便又退去了，而地上那根柱子终于现出了原型，大约一米长的柱身后拖了一根长长的导火线，原来这是最近刚刚研制成功的新型武器，随后长官示意大家，把目光从那上面移开，接着，他又对各种兵器进行了一系列讲解，并请人示范了用法。由于木兰参的是骑射兵，所以箭术和马术都是非常重要的，而骑马是木兰最为擅长的，至于射箭，却是一窍不通，因此，她时常受到马术官的表扬，却时常受到射术官的批评，然而孰能生巧，不久木兰的箭术日益提高，最终成为了该军中技术一流的骑射兵之一。
