《夏目友人帐》主要讲述了男主人公夏目贵志拥有可以看到妖怪的特殊能力。因为父母双亡他的性格较为孤僻，并且由于他具有特殊的能力，他常辗转在于亲戚之间并被同龄人欺负。虽然他经历了许多不幸，但他依旧有好善良没有埋怨任何人。最终他被有好善良的藤原夫妇收养并进入高中。有一天，他被妖怪追赶躲进神社，不小心打破了一只强大妖怪斑的封印。并牵涉到了他祖母夏目玲子的遗物—一本同妖怪签订的`契约书。之后，这只强大的妖怪平时便变成猫的样子待在夏目身边保护他，但是他的条件是夏目后要把这本契约书给它。但在此之前夏目决定尽其所能把契约书上的名字还给妖怪们让它们得到自由。由此，一个个温馨、感人、惊险的故事就此展开。

不知道你是否还能记得起我，我们之前虽然从未谋过面，但我还是几次惹你生气了。当时我都想想不出来为什么？明明我是希望你能开心，可结果还是适得其反了。那时我认为是我不讨你喜欢，才会惹你生气。后来我认真地反思了，才知道是我做错了，才会惹你生气。你还在生我气吗？
自从最后一次惹你生气之后，我就莫名地害怕起来，这还是我第一次害怕女孩儿，害怕再次惹你生气，所以我最终做了个决定：还是断了联系吧！这样你就不会生气了，我也可以从害怕中解脱了。
