接收来自世界的`各种信息，就意味着我们要保持对于社会的热忱，而不是冷眼旁观，要勇于承担责任，而不是停留于言语层面。而今日之社会，媒介技术的更新与发展为个体表达提供了更为平等的信息输出窗口，这看似使每个人都有了参与社会事务的便捷渠道，实则使社会形成相互隔离的“物理社群”，而不同的社群间的关系变得更为冷漠，甚至彼此指责。这种冷漠也是个人主义作用的结果，在去中心化的网络时代，所有人都习惯与从自己的位置发言，真假对错之分在此就成了无足轻重。这种模糊了真理与谬误的界限的做法显然是缺乏社会责任感的体现。
缺失了对社会的责任担当，人就容易陷入“精致的利己主义”的泥潭中。这种利己主义就表现为冷漠无情。契科夫有言：“冷漠无情，就是灵魂的瘫痪，就是过早的亡。”冷漠无情有时能保全个人的利益，最终是不利于社会的进步的。我们常常需要思考“从来如此便对吗？”而个人力量的微小不能成为无动于衷的借口，恰如黑人运动之母罗莎帕克斯，她在公交车上以行动反对对社会上的种族歧视，也掀起了黑人运动的热潮。她冒着生命危险，做出了有利于社会公平的壮举。
正如卡尔波普尔所言：“任何时候，我们都是被关进自己认知框架的囚徒。”如果不能从狭隘的自我认知中走出来，又何来对于社会，对于人类进步事业的真正关心呢？作为当代青年，我们应树立“成功不必在我”的集体主义价值观，还要具有“功成必定有我”的社会责任感，仰望星空，脚踏实地，在集体发展中实现自我发展。
