一场鸡瘟病，母火鸡和刚刚孵出来的一窝小火鸡差不多了个干净，只剩下一只小火鸡。看着可怜的小火鸡，我抱着试试看的态度，把它送到花娘的窝里。花娘是我养的一条老母狗。
我把小火鸡塞进花娘怀里，它立刻就用舌头舔小火鸡的背，留下气味标记，也是狗的一种认亲仪式。小火鸡也十分乖巧，拱进花娘的怀里就用小嘴在狗肚皮上轻轻啄咬，当然是在咬扁虱和跳蚤。
这以后，小火鸡和花娘成了形影不离的伙伴。不管小火鸡到哪里去找食，花娘都紧紧跟随在后面。晚上，小火鸡就睡在花娘的窝棚里。有一天半夜，下起瓢泼大雨，旧狗棚有点漏雨，我生怕小火鸡会被淋湿，打着手电到狗棚一看，花娘弓着腰，就像一把伞一样，把小火鸡罩在自己的身体底下，小火鸡睡得正香呢。
