下课时，我喜欢和好朋友一起去榕树下玩捉迷藏。有一次，我当鬼，而我的好朋友就躲在榕树的左边，我却怎么也找不到她，因为如果我往左跑，她就往右躲，根本就是唱反调嘛！最后我们两人都忍不住哈哈大笑。
每当我的考试成绩不理想时，我都会自己独自一人坐在榕树下静静思考，检讨自己是否不够努力，还有甚么需要改进，我常常陷入困境之中，等到朋友来安慰我、鼓励我后，我才对自己更有信心。
有时，我会和同学一起去榕树下散步、图画、聊天，或玩各式各样我们自己发明的游戏。有一天，我们原本在聊有关于家庭生活背景的故事，有的悲伤，有的快乐。有一次，我们在树下玩成语接龙，双方轮流说一句成语，大家想尽知道的成语，真是有趣。

Partly autobiographical, the novel abounds with social criticism and sinister gothic elements.
