3、散邪：柴胡的散邪作用，已为所重视，创“新方八阵”立方十五，柴胡占其十三方。均分别体现了柴胡具有寒散、温散、平散、补散之作用。其寒散配黄芩、生地，温散配，平散配、生姜，补散配、熟地，均取其有很好的散邪外出功能。
4、清热：柴胡具有良好的清热作用，言其能治“寒热邪气”《伤寒论》有小柴胡汤专治热传少阳，热入室之证。清热临床常配伍黄芩、丹皮、栀子等品。无论外感热邪或脏腑郁热均可使之，其效验迅捷。《药性论》也谓其：“主时疾，内外热不解”。
